35 Square Tear-Off With Custom Milled Rafter Tails

This one is a little different from your average re-roofing job. We're doing a full 35 square tear-off, but the part that makes this project stand out is the woodwork. The home has 21 custom rafter tails that needed to be replaced - and you can't just grab those off a shelf.

Here's what we were working with: we started by milling raw 4x6 lumber down to precise 2.5x5.5 inch dimensions. From there, each piece gets shaped and sanded by hand to match the original profile. The new pieces sitting next to the weathered originals show exactly how much detail goes into getting that profile right. Clean curves, smooth edges, consistent shape across every single tail.

That kind of precision matters more than people realize. Rafter tails aren't just decorative. They're part of the home's architectural character, and on a house like this one - with its octagonal turret and multi-section roof line - getting them wrong would be obvious. So we take the time to get them right before anything else goes on.

Once the custom woodwork is wrapped up, we'll be installing a GAF Timberline HDZ across the full roof. It's one of the most trusted shingles in the industry - built for durability and designed to perform long-term. Combined with the structural detail work underneath, this roof is going to be solid from the decking up.
