Flat roofs are sneaky. A small crack or soft spot might not look like much from the ground, but up top it's a different story. Water finds every weak point, and once it gets under the surface, you're not just dealing with a roof problem anymore - you're dealing with wood rot, interior damage, and costs that keep climbing.

Here's what we were working with on this Rialto home. The flat section of the roof had worn through and needed a full tear-off before anything else could happen. That's the right call. Slapping new material over a compromised surface just delays the inevitable. We pulled it back down to clean OSB decking and started fresh.

From there, we brought in torch-down modified bitumen - the go-to system for flat roof applications like this one. It's heat-welded directly to the deck, which means no gaps, no lifting edges, and a watertight bond across the entire surface. The granulated cap sheet you see on the finished roof isn't just for looks either - it reflects heat and adds a layer of UV protection that helps the system hold up in the Inland Empire sun.

The finished surface runs clean from edge to edge, sitting right alongside the tile section of the roof with no gaps at the transition. That detail matters. A poorly handled transition point is one of the most common spots we see leaks start. We make sure those areas are sealed properly every time.

Flat roofs don't forgive shortcuts. Whether it's a repair or a full re-roofing job, the only way to do it is to do it right the first time. If your flat roof is showing signs of wear, don't wait for a leak to make the decision for you.
