This one had some history to it. Three layers total - two layers of shingles stacked on top of an original wood shake base. That's a setup we see more often than you'd think on older homes in the Pomona area, and it creates real problems. All that weight, all that trapped moisture, and a roof deck underneath that's taken years of abuse.
Before a single new shingle goes down, everything comes off. Then we re-sheath the entire roof deck. That step matters more than most people realize. You can put the best shingles in the world on a compromised deck and still end up with issues down the road. A clean, solid base is what makes the new roof actually perform the way it should.
For this job, we're installing Owens Corning Cool Plus shingles. These are designed to reflect more solar energy than standard shingles, which translates directly to a cooler attic and lower energy costs - especially during those brutal Inland Empire summers. It's a smart upgrade that pays for itself over time.
When a roof has been layered like this one, a full re-roofing job isn't just the better option - it's the only responsible one. Patching over problems or adding another layer would just kick the can down the road. Stripping it back, fixing the deck, and starting fresh is what gives this home a roof that will actually last.
